Tamasha is a 2015 Hindi drama film written and directed by Imtiaz Ali. It stars Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. The film, set against the backdrop of the vibrant, fast-paced world of Bollywood, tells the story of an aspiring actor (Kapoor) who falls for a young female movie star (Padukone). The film was announced in July 2011 with Imtiaz Ali signed on to direct the project. The cast was announced soon after with Kapoor cast as Sanjay Azhar while Padukone starred opposite him as Gayatri Azhar Khan. The film was in the process of completion and in post-production in August 2014 when Imtiaz Ali came out with a press statement saying that both lead actors would not be appearing in the film. He revealed that he became unhappy with Deepika's character and that she was unwilling to take part in further shoots. A few days later, Kapoor announced he would be stepping down from the project due to uncertainty surrounding Padukone's commitment. A day after this, it was reported that Imtiaz Ali's company had walked away from the project citing irreconcilable differences of opinion with filmmaker Parviz Shahrokhian who had signed on as associate director alongside Sajid Khan. Later, Shahrokhian had also confirmed he was no longer attached to the project. The role of Deepika's character was then recast with debutante Sonam Kapoor who replaced Padukone in the film. It was announced that Imtiaz Ali intended to complete the film without Kapoor, meaning that it would be an independent directorial effort for Shahrokhian, who had worked on the projects "Rock On!!" and "Bigg Boss Kaun Banega Crorepati". A press conference was held on 6 January 2015 announcing Tamasha would release on 16 February 2015. Imtiaz Ali revealed that Tamasha would be shot in three parts, which would make the film 128 minutes in length. Imtiaz Ali said he had always planned to make a film about Bollywood. The script was written after the release of his previous films "Oyster" and "Rock On!" "Tamasha" is inspired by Bollywood musicals he watched with his father when he was growing up. He revealed that the film would feature very little action and utilise song sequences to convey meaning instead of dialogue sequences. Imtiaz said the movie's tone is completely different from his other films, but still attractive because of the songs and performances shown by both Kapoor and Padukone. cfa1e77820
